Cabalian is a town in Southern Leyte, Philippines, with a rich history tied to the region’s early inhabitants and Spanish colonization. 

Pre-Hispanic Era

Cabalian was believed to be a significant settlement long before the arrival of the Spaniards. Its early inhabitants were part of the ancient Pintados, a group of Visayans known for their intricate tattoos. The area was abundant in natural resources, which supported agriculture and fishing as primary livelihoods.

Spanish Colonization

During the Spanish period, Cabalian became an important mission area for Catholic missionaries, particularly the Jesuits and later the Augustinians. The town was officially established as a parish in the early 18th century. The presence of the Catholic Church played a key role in shaping the town’s socio-cultural identity, including its fiestas and religious traditions.

The town’s name, Cabalian, is said to derive from the term kabalihan, meaning a place of exchange or barter. This reflects its historical role as a trading hub in the region.

American Period and Philippine Independence

Under American rule, Cabalian’s development was oriented toward modern governance and education. Post-independence, the town continued to thrive agriculturally and economically due to its fertile land and coastal location.

Renaming to San Juan

In 1955, the town of Cabalian was officially renamed San Juan, after Saint John the Baptist, the town’s patron saint. Despite the name change, many locals and older records still refer to the area as Cabalian, reflecting its historical significance.
